once again, this blog will have to undergo a makeover due to certain requirements of my job.

besides writing about solecisms (with regard to grammar and not social etiquette because my middle name is neither GRACEFUL nor COURTEOUS) and reviews, i shall also discuss - well - almost everything under the sun.

so there.

watch out for this blog's relaunching then.

one thing i've noticed is that there are a LOT of people who are either too lazy to use apostrophes or are completely unaware that an apostrophe literally and figurativelly spells a lot of difference.

ex:

it's vs its

there's vs theirs

your vs you're

i believe that pronouns were extensively discussed during our primary years. even at high school if i remember correctly. so what gives?

aka The Spanish Apartment

One of the most beautiful "coming of age" movies I've seen and a bit - mind you, just a bit - reminiscent of Reality Bites and With Honors, The Spanish Apartment is about Xavier's stay at Barcelona as a foreign exchange student. There, he lives in a rented apartment with roommates from all parts of the world - Belgium, Germany, Italy to name a few. According to the web reviews I've read, this is a rated R movie but since I watched it @ Star Movies, I guess they've simply cut out any graphic scenes that could contaminate "innocent" minds.

Naturally, since I'm also studying Spanish, I had fun trying to understand what the people were saying when they spoke in Spanish. And since I'm also planning to study French (dream big, right?), I also got a kick at trying to decipher their fast-speaking-Francais.

Favorite Scene: Anna, the Brit girl, answered the phone and it was Xavier's Maman calling. She then hurried to the note posted in the wall, the one where details of each roommate's location were written - in their own languages! In painstaking French, she told Xavier's mom that her son was at school and was going to return later that evening.

movie: exodus

besides the fact that we got to receive FREE EK DAY PASSES, there are other (good) reasons to watch exodus:

- support pinoy movies; it's time to be patriotic

- give credit where credit's due; they spent a lot of money for special effects and really, compared to other fil movies, it's a damn sight better

- it has a storyline with depth (again, comparatively speaking)

- great cast

movie: the myth

absolutely the best jacky chan movie ever. for me that is. i certainly won't stick my opinion down anyone's throat. it somehow reminds me of kung fu hustle but i'm not sure why.
the myth is about jacky chan (yes, he actually used his own name in this movie), an archaelogist with a recurring dream about a general sworn to protect the concubine princess meant for his king. an ambush forces them to become stranded together for a long time, long enough for both of them to fall in love with each other. but of course, the general's code of honor demands him not to indulge his personal wants and do what's good for the country.
meanwhile, jacky, with the help of (and sometimes, due to the absence of) his best friend, william, has discovered something that may be the key to unlocking jacky's dreams. unfortunately for jacky, however, william may be part of a sinister plan that just might destroy any chances for jacky to turn his dreams into reality.
there were some scenes in the movie that made goosebumps of my skin because it reminded me of poignant moments from the gladiator, lord of the rings and troy. honestly, when i knew what was happening, i couldn't stop myself from crying. i super love the face of the leading lady in the movie - she reminds me of those old kung fu movies i used to watch in TV where everyone were wearing flowing robes and flying to and fro. and when she danced! never have i realized that the chinese art of dancing could be sooo..heartrending and beautiful. i wanna learn too! haha
the scenes in india were magnificent, too. love the part when the women were doing yoga. mm..i think i wanna learn that too.
all in all, a verrrrrrrry good movie. beyond good in fact. but then again, keep in mind that i'm easy to please. the ending wasn't to my liking however and if you've been occasionally reading my entries here, then you should know by now why.

kids are naturally afraid of the dark, of what's hiding inside the closets and under the bed. while kids are coddled here and allowed to sleep with their parents until they feel secure, kids in the states and maybe other western countries are thought to be independent at an early age.

personally, i don't approve on forcing children to be self-reliant. just because they can't sleep alone at five doesn't mean they'll grow up to be cowards. my siblings and i have slept together with our parents when we were kids and no way can we be categorized as scaredy cats. we actually love watching horror movies, more so compared to those who grew up with such a strict upbringing.

and what's with sleeping in the dark? why do some parents insist their children to sleep in the dark? if they don't feel like it, then let them be. i just don't feel comfortable with people who force children to become more mature than their ages.

boogeyman

starring barry watson as tim, a man who once suffered "delusions" about the boogeyman taking away his dad when he was a kid. but naturally, it's true. movie also features lucy lawless - aka xena - in normal attire and minus the seemingly bulging muscles when she's in warrior form. great movie. i like the logic behind their demolishing technique of the boogeyman. you just go back to where it all started...

the first time i learned about a wax museum was when i was maybe seven or eight years old..it was in childcraft's book 10 - places to know. everything in it-rather, everyone in it--were made of wax. i've been looking forward to seeing it in person all these years, it's like in my top 10 places to visit list but after watching house of wax..i think..not! thanks but no thanks, anyway.

house of wax

spoiler alert!

i guess i have to be thankful that i was proven wrong in this case. seeing robert zemeckis' name in the credits kinda put me off the movie because i was afraid he was going to massacre the whole cast again. obviously not. so maybe, his trademark is just more on skinning people alive and other revolting tortures one can inflict to the human body. that and having a semi-cliffhanger ending -- you know, just when you think it's gonna end and then you see all those godzilla babies hatching out.

everyone's acting was pretty solid..well everyone except for paris hilton. ah well, we shall cut her some slack..newbie, after all. movie's high on the shock and gross factor so if you're the queasy type, you definitely should stick to watching titanic. also starring chad michael murray.

man of the house

basically that's what the movie really is. tommy lee jones stars as mr. sharp, texas ranger cum assistant cheerleader. his main job is to guard five star witnesses from threats to their lives --- just so happens that they're also cheerleaders and set to turn his life oopsy-daisy-upside-down.

although the plot's predictable, if you haven't lost your sense of humor, you'd still be able to appreciate the movie. basically, a coke-lite kind of movie that may not exactly brighten your day but at least it gets a ray of light in.

peru finds headless mummy
segun las noticias, archaelogists have unearthed the oldest mummy ever found in peru. the body belongs to what they believe is a huari official. huaris belong to a warrior type society and lived about 1,300 years ago. archaelogists theorized that the official was decapitated by the ichmas to erase any and every proof of the tribe that once dominated them. tsk tsk..

first baby photo of massive star twins
and that's the exact tagline for one of the topics covered in the latest smithsonian institute newsletter. they use such information to predict how it is that the sun and earth was formed. the scientists were actually surprised that the system was just 100,000 years old. oh. okay. so that's still young?!

bush praise abbas
i actually thought this was in reference to the girl band, the abbas. rather, they were talking about palestinian leader abbas. *knocks on head* estupida!

ford posts loss for third quarter this year
this is the first time they've incurred a loss in profits since 2003. their sales for SUVs have dropped dramatically due to high gasoline prices. i don't know why but i kinda thought of ford company as somewhat invincible. i hope they can still get back on track.
